If you're new to the GTA series, GTA 5 is the best starting point. It's the most polished, widely available entry with modern controls, three protagonists, and a massive online component that keeps it fresh. It runs on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The main GTA series consists of 14 games in total if you include all standalone entries and expansions. The core "HD Universe" began with GTA IV in 2008.
GTA 6 is set in Rockstar's "HD Universe" — the same fictional universe as GTA IV, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption. The game is set in Leonida (fictional Florida), centered on Vice City, which last appeared in GTA: Vice City Stories in 2006. While it shares the same universe, GTA 6 features entirely new characters and a standalone story, so no prior GTA knowledge is required to enjoy it.
GTA 5's main story takes approximately 31–32 hours to complete on a focused playthrough. If you include side missions and strangers/freaks missions, that extends to about 47–50 hours. Full 100% completion — including all collectibles, random events, property purchases, and achievements — can take upwards of 80–100 hours. GTA 6's map is reportedly larger, so completion times will likely be significantly higher.
Based on analysis of the official GTA 6 trailers, the map appears to be significantly larger than GTA 5's Los Santos. The Leonida state depicted in the trailers includes a densely detailed Vice City metropolitan area, extensive coastal regions, rural highways, swamp areas, and what appears to be multiple distinct districts and towns outside the main city.
